For five years, McGee McCovey worked as the indispensable Assistant to Sara Finney-Johnson, the Creator and Executive Producer of UPN’s hit comedy, “THE PARKERS.” In fact, her first television pitch was so funny that producers made it the premiere episode of the series. Two years later, she wrote an episode entitled, “Take the Cookies and Run,” which was one of the highest-rated of the series.

In addition to her work on “THE PARKERS,” McGee McCovey co-authored SKINNY WOMEN ARE EVIL for the full-figured comedienne. Published in April 2003 by ATRIA BOOKS, a division of SIMON & SCHUSTER, the comedy memoir landed on the NEW YORK TIMES Best Seller’s list within two weeks of its release and also reached the #1 spot on ESSENCE Magazine’s Best Sellers List. Her second book, SKINNY COOKS CAN’T BE TRUSTED, published by AMISTAD, a division of HARPER COLLINS, was released in November 2006, and was nominated for a NAACP Image Award. Her third book, the young adult novel, BEACON HILLS HIGH, released in September 2008, also earned a NAACP Image Award nomination.

Author, journalist, television writer and producer Sherri McGee McCovey does it all with relative ease. Most recently, Sherri served as Coordinating Producer of the Image Award winning, “Mo’Nique Show” a late night talk show produced by Black Entertainment Television featuring Oscar-winning comedienne/actress Mo’Nique.

Prior to that, she worked as a Producer on the hit VH-1 reality show, “CHARM SCHOOL”. She was also Coordinating Producer/Writer and then Co-Producer on the OXYGEN network show, MO’NIQUE’S F.A.T. CHANCE, America’s first full-figured reality beauty pageant. The highest-rated program in the history of the network, the show was nominated for a 2006 NAACP Image Award. That same year, McGee-McCovey co-wrote the half-hour television pilot, “MO’S HOUSE” for ABC and prior to that, served as a Producer on the TELEPICTURES talk show pilot, “MO’NIQUE.”

Other production credits include: Assistant on the 20th CENTURY FOX film, DOCTOR DOLITTLE, starring Eddie Murphy, Associate Music Producer on “THE KEENEN IVORY WAYANS” late-night talk show, Publicist for FOX FAMILY CHANNEL where she assisted in the start-up of the children’s network by developing press kits and supplemental press material for its first-run television features and series. Her extensive resume also includes Travel Manager/Production Assistant on “ROLONDA WATTS” and “TEMPESTT BLEDSOE” daytime talk shows in New York, as well as Research Assistant to the late ROOTS author, Alex Haley. 

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Communications from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, McGee McCovey began her professional career as a Service Representative for American Airlines in Los Angeles. For more than a decade, McGee McCovey moonlighted as a freelance journalist and was a regular contributor to Essence magazine. Her byline also appeared regularly in InStyle, Heart & Soul, Upscale, and Black Enterprise, to name a few.

A member of the Writer’s Guild of America, West, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Spelman College Alumni Association, McGee McCovey shares her knowledge of the television industry at writer’s symposiums and with high school and college students, and contributes to several charitable organizations including Crystal Stairs, Jenesse Center, and the American Diabetes Association.
